The college follows the curriculum designed by Punjabi University, Patiala. It works within the frame work of the curriculum and rules & regulations of Punjab Government are followed.


ACADEMIC COURSES

The following is the range of programme options being provided to the students for awards of degrees.

Degrees are awarded to the students in the discipline of

(A)   Three year Degree Courses ( Arts, Science and Commerce)
(B)    Four year Degree Course ( Agriculture )
(C)
   Two year post Graduate Courses ( Economics and Punjabi )
    
In Post Graduate courses, Semester systems is followed. There is internal assessment of 20%. Internal assessment will be based on the performance in house tests, seminars, research papers and the attendance.


SUBJECTS

THREE YEAR DEGREE COURSE ( HUMANITIES / ARTS )

Students are required to take three elective subjects along with two compulsory subjects ( English and Punjabi)

Elective Subjects :

According to the decision taken by the academic council and syndicate of Punjabi University, students can opt 3 elective subjects taking any one from one group apart from English (Communication Skills) and Punjabi (Compulsory) or Punjab History and Culture :
Group 1 : Economics, Physical Education
Group 2 : History, Mathematics, Philosophy
Group 3 : Political Science
Group 4 : Punjabi Literature, Hindi Literature, English Literature
Group 5 : Geography, Music Vocal
Group 6 : Tax procedure and practice, Principles and practice of insurance, Business and office practice.

Important Notes :
a) There are only 160 seats for physical education in B.A. Part I. Only those students will be given admission in physical education who are seleted through the physical fitness test to be conducted by the college. All students taking physical education will be required to take active parts in sports and games
b) The students who have not studied mathematics in 10+2 can not opt for mathematics in B.A.
c) Mathematics olympiad is conducted by the Punjab University, Chandigarh in the mathematics department in the first phase of October. The eligibility to take part in The Olympiad is 10+1, 10+2 (non medical).


SPECIAL NOTE REGARDING HINDI
There is a provision of study of BOTH OPTIONAL Subjects prescribed by Punjabi University, Patiala

The following are the courses offered in Hindi in B.A.

B.A. part 1

Option 1 : Patra Ek - Hindi Sahatiya
Option 2 : Patra Ek - Prem Chand - Vishesh Adhayan

B.A. Part 2

Option 1 : Patra Ek - Madhya Kalin Hindi Kavya
Option 2 : Patra Ek - Hindi Natak aur Ekanki ( Vidhagan Parichya Sahit )

B.A Part 3
Option 1 : Patra Ek : Hindi Upanyas ( Vidhagat Parichya Sahit )
Option 2 : Patra Ek : Hindi Nibandh v Anaya Gadhya Roop ( Vidhagat Parichya Sahit )


Punjab History and Culture : The following categories of candidates shall be allowed to opt for the paper of Punjab History and Culture in lieu of Punjabi (compulsory) in B.A/B.Sc./B.Com and other related courses.
Candidates who passed the matriculation or 10+2 examination from the schools / institutions situated outside the State of Punjab.

Note : Candidates who passed their Matriculation or 10+2 examination from any school/board/institution situated in Punjab shall not be eligible to opt for the paper of Punjab History and Culture in lieu of Punjabi (Compulsory) in B.A/B.Sc/B.Com and other related courses.

THREE YEAR DEGEE COURSE ( SCIENCE )

1. B.Sc. (Medical) Part I, II and III
Subjects : Chemistry, Zoology, Botany along with Punjabi ( Communication ) and English (Communication )

2. B. Sc ( Non Medical ) Part I, II and III
Subject : Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics along with Punjabi (Communication) and English (Communication )

Note : w.e.f . 2003-04 , only Punjabi will be the compulsory subject in the first year of B. Sc (Non Medical/ Medical ) along with three science subject. Similarly, only English will be the compulsory subject in the second year.

THREE YEAR DEGREE COURSE ( COMMERCE )

B. Com I : English (communication skills), Punjabi/Punjab History and Culture, Financial Accounting, Information Technology for Business, Business Regulatory Framework, Business Mathematics, Business Economics.
Eligibility for Admission : Admission in B.Com 1st year is given on the basis of merit of 10+2. The candidate seeking admission to the course should have secured the following marks in 10+2.

10+2 (Commerce Group )                                                                                 :   40%
10+2 ( Math, Economics, Management , Accounting )                                 :   45%
                            any two subjects
10+2 Arts and Science                                                                                       :   50%

FOUR YEAR DEGREE COURSE ( AGRICULTURE )

B. Sc. (Agriculture)
Brijindra College is the only college of Punjabi University which offers Four Year degree course in the subject of Agriculture since 1961. The admission in B.Sc (Agriculture) Part I is made on the basis of merit of 10+2 (Medical, Non Medical and Agriculture). The candidate should have secured at least 45% marks in 10+2. The selected candidate will be required to pay the fees at the spot, otherwise his/her selection will be cancelled and the seat will be given to the next eligible student.
According to the rules of Punjabi University, there is an internal assessment of 20% which will be prepared on the basis of house tests.
B. Sc (Agriculture ) Part IV students will be required to opt only that subject which is offered by the college. The following is the list of subjects in B. Sc. 1st year :
1. English
2. Hindi or Punjabi or Urdu or English
3. Basic Microbiology
4. Introductory Agroclimatology.
5. Introductory Land Scaping and Floriculture.
6. Chemistry Organic
7. a) Mathematics      b) Biology
8. Agronomy

M. A. (Semester System )

The admission to M.A. Punjabi and Economics will be made according to the University rules.

Special Note :
1. Admission to all courses will be made according to the eligibility conditions and other conditions set by the University and Punjab Govt.. The syllabus issued by Punjabi University may be referred in this concern.
2. The admission to M.A. classes will be on the basis of merit of the aggregate of minimum 50% marks in B.A and minimum 50% marks in the concerned subject.

TUTORIAL SYSTEM

The students can benefit from the tutorial system existing in the college and can seek help and advice relating to the difficulties faced by them in the college. The tutor owes the responsibility to develop the personality and personal conduct of the students and also to maintain the discipline in the college. There are two tutorial periods in a month. The student found absent in the tutorial classes can be imposed a special fine also.

RULES FOR LEAVE

The tutor has the authority to grant leave for 3 days. A student seeking leave for more than 3 days will have to give application to the Principal. The name of the student found absent for more than 10 days, will be struck out off the rolls. The leave should have been sanctioned one day in advance. Written intimation and medical certificate is mandatory for medical leave.
( The student will not be entitled to take the advantage of medical leave availed by him if he/she does not fulfill the conditions for minimum lecture attendance as prescribed by the University).

HOUSE TEST

House tests are conducted in the month of December / January each year. The student who is absent in any paper will be considered as fail in that paper. Fine may also be imposed on that student. The whole examination will be cancelled if the candidate is caught using unfair means and all the awards and concessions provided to him/her will be cancelled . He/She may also be imposed a fine. Such students will not be awarded any prizes on the basis of house tests.

The students who do not fulfill the required conditions set by the University for minimum marks in the house tests, will not be eligible to sit in the annual examination. The students who fail to get the required marks in the December test or remain absent in the house test without prior sanction from the Principal, will not be allowed to sit in the special test. Special Test is not the right of the student. The student absent without any reasonable cause, will not be issued the roll number for final examination.

RULES FOR ATTENDANCE

Minimum 75% attendance is compulsory in the theory classes. Students will not be eligible to take the final examination in case the attendance deficiency is more than 15% in theory and more than 7% in the practical's. The intimation about the shortage of lectures will be given in time and roll number will not be given in case of lecture shortage.
( The student will not be entitled to take the advantage of medical leave availed by him if he/she does not fulfill the conditions for minimum lecture attendance as prescribed by the University.)

RULES OF DISCIPLINE

1. Regular attendance means regular attendance in all the periods in a day. The students absent for a long period without permission are liable to fined and their names will be struck off the college rolls.
2. Students are required to attend the special addresses to be delivered by the Principal, teachers or any other prominent personalities on academic and cultural topics.
3. Students are required to be in the approved places only. Ghalib Park ( Trinjan ) is reserved for girls only. Entry of boys in this park is strictly prohibited.
4. All applications to the Principal should be in Punjabi.
5. Students should keep the campus neat and clean. Dustbins kept at various places should be used properly. Plucking of flowers is strictly prohibited. The students found guilty can be imposed heavy fines.
6. Students found guilty for the damage of public property such as desks, chairs, benches, window panes, fans etc. are liable to pay for the new item. They will also be imposed a special fine. No meeting is allowed without prior the permission of the Principal.
7. Students are allowed to approach the Principal through proper channel to discuss their problems. Any external influence without any permission will be considered as violation of disciplinary rules.
8. Every student is required to keep the identity card with him/her. It should be produced on demand by any responsible authority of the college.
9. Smoking, drinking , playing cards and gambling etc. is strictly prohibited inside the college campus. Driving is banned in the sports ground.
10. Use of mobile phone by the students in the college is strictly prohibited. The guilty students will be imposed fine and the mobile phone will be seized.
11. The Principal is the final authority to decide about any activity of the students such as misconduct or violation of the discipline.The students involved in such activities can be fined, rusticated/expelled from the college or may be blacklisted.
12.Principal has the full authority to change any rule in the mid session. The rules can also be modified according to the instructions issued by the University.
13. Patka is strictly prohibited in the college campus. Any student found in such a head gear will be fined . He may be suspended if found guilty for the second time.
14. Any objection, suggestion or complaint can be put in writing into the suggestion box place outside the Principal's office. This box is opened every week by the Principal only.
